October is fire prevention month.  In the southeast that normally means a month full of fire prevention activities, the highlight of which are shows put on at the local schools by fire department clowns.  They teach about matches being tools and not toys, and how to stop – drop and roll.


150th Anniversary of the Siege of Fort McAllister and Winter Muster (Dec 13)

FtMcAllister-canonReenactment of the taking of "Guardian of Savannah" to be Commemorated by Fort McAllister State Historic Park

Join the troops at Fort McAllister on December 13 as they reenact the taking of the fort by Union forces and General William T. Sherman on that day 150 years ago. The fort, known as the “Guardian of Savannah,” was attacked seven times by Union ironclads before Sherman sent troops to take the fort by land, where they outnumbered the Confederates 25 to 1. This significant Civil War battle marked the end of Sherman’s March to the Sea in 1864. Skirmishes, drills and living history programswill be held throughout the day and the final assault reenactment will take place at 5 p.m.


16th Annual Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival

Over thirty thousand visitors poured into Richmond Hill for the 16th Annual Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival this past weekend. The festival is about more than games and great food; it's also about giving back to the community. The Ogeechee Seafood Festival has always had an impact on non-profits, like the Exchange Club, Richmond Hill Lions Club and the YMCA. The local organizations use the festival as a fundraising project, raising money to give to those in need.

We are pleased to announce our first event at the Bark Park – the annual Paws in the Park Fall Festival on November 8th 2014.  Please join us for this dog and family friendly fun day which kicks off at 10am with a 3k fun run and half mile walk to raise money for the Bark Park.  Registration costs $25, with children under 12 running for free with an adult, registry is available online at or by collecting a registration pack at PawParazzi at Parker’s Square in Richmond Hill as well as on the day.  Retail booths are also available for $50 each to include a promotional flyer in the goody bags and company name to appear on race participants’ T-shirts.  We really would like more people to race and take a retail booth to ensure the success of this vital fundraiser so please contact us as soon as you can.


Exit 76 to Perform in Feature Film, Ben & Ara

Hinesville, GA. Exit 76, a local band from Liberty County, was recently asked to perform in a scene in the upcoming feature film, Ben & Ara. The film will feature the full band in a pivotal scene, as well as their original music. The group will also be performing live at the Movie Wrap Party to be held this week where local media, dignitaries, the cast and crew will celebrate the success of filming in Liberty County.

All guests had the opportunity to meet local firefighters, participate in health awareness activities and learn ways to improve home safety.

$22,000 Awarded to Teachers by Bright Ideas Prize Patrol

Coastal Electric Cooperative and its Foundation awarded 16 grants totaling over $22,000 Wednesday and Thursday to school teachers in Bryan, Liberty and McIntosh County. The winning teachers were caught totally by surprise when the Bright Ideas Prize Patrol came to their classroom to present them with giant balloon bouquets, gifts and a presentation check.

Fall is in the air and so will the smell of smoke! Fall weather in Georgia is perfect for working in the yard, and that includes clearing leaves and vegetation with fire. However, this type of burning is the number one cause of wildfires. The Bryan County Emergency Services and the Georgia Forestry Commission urges all residents to take extra safety measures this fall when burning.
