The Rotary Club of Richmond Hill is reminding local high school students of its May 24th deadline for applications for two scholarships worth $3,000.

 

The first college scholarship is worth $2,000 and was established in memory of Jay D. Gardner who was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Richmond Hill as well as a Lawyer, Judge and State Legislator. The second, the ‘Mary Bean Memorial Technical College Scholarship’ is worth $1,000 and honors the memory of this local business woman, wife and mother who was a living example of the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”.

The Richmond Hill Farmer’s Market had a special market this week. The market hosted a Health & Fitness Expo on Tuesday, May 7th at J.F. Gregory Park.

In addition to 45 regular market vendors, the market had 15-20 fitness vendors. The Expo was set up outside the pavilion. Many stopped by to learn about the local health and fitness businesses in Richmond Hill. The businesses were very pleased with the turnout! In addition to all of the great vendors, 92.3 Country Classic was broadcasting live and the Richmond Hill High School Band performed at 7:00 PM. What a great market!

Dr. McGovern, from Coastal Empire Plastic Surgery, which has clinics at Frances Meeks Way in Richmond Hill and in Savannah, was inspired to seize the opportunity to raise money to help this charity in its life changing work when she recently ran educational seminars for local people who wanted to find out more about the latest plastic surgery methods and non-invasive techniques. People attending these free seminars were encouraged to make a donation to the charity ‘Faith in Practice’ and Dr. McGovern personally matched these donations.

Bryan County, GA – April 30th, 2013: Over 150 people showed their support for making the dream of a dog park in our community become a reality by attending the Bryan County Bark Park’s first fundraising event on the evening of Thursday, April 25th. This non-profit organization’s initial target of $10,000 has been achieved. The money raised will enable the fencing work to begin to enclose the 1.5 acres in Henderson Park, allocated by the Bryan County Commissioners earlier this month, as soon as the clearing and land preparation by the County is completed.

150th Anniversary of the Civil War

As we continue to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, Fort McAllister's Park Manager and Historian, Danny Brown will speak for us on Thursday, May 2, at 7:00 p.m. The lecture will be held at Fort McAllister State Historic Park. Ranger Brown will discuss the fascinating history of the CSS Nashville, aka the "Rattlesnake", a 1221 ton Confederate blockade runner. The Nashville ran aground on a sandbar and the Union ironclad, Montauk bombarded her until she caught fire and burned to the water line. Her remains lie on the bottom of the Ogeechee River just across from the Fort.
