Many of you have probably seen the "Ice Bucket Challenge" rage that has circulated the social media lately. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. The incidence of ALS is two per 100,000 people, and it is estimated that as many as 30,000 Americans may have the disease at any given time. ALS can strike anyone. The cause of ALS is unknown and there is still no cure but in recent years there has been a tremendous amount of new scientific understanding about the disease. This can be credited to the fact that communities are reaching out and wanting answers.

With a school of nearly 2,000 kids, Richmond Hill High School’s Open House was a crowded one.  Receiving schedules, changing classes, and finding the rooms across the two different campuses have proven difficult for many students.  As opposed to how students received schedules in the past, which was by going to their advisement teacher and receiving them, the students were all directed to the east gym to receive their schedules from there. Proving a bit more tedious for receiving your schedule, but more organized the new method was a big change in the open house system.

Back to School Event at Plantation Apartments in Richmond Hill

The young people at the Plantation Apartments celebrated going back to school with a Saturday afternoon event.  Unity in the Community partnered with the management and residents to make sure the children enjoyed their last weekend before classes began. While they played games, enjoyed the bouncy house, food and drinks, they were also able to show off their musical talents in a talent show sponsored by IM Entertainment. Parents were given the opportunity to register to vote.

Approximately 1,000 Bryan County School System employees gathered together on Friday, August 1, 2014 to celebrate the start of another wonderful school year. This year’s convocation took place at the Richmond Hill Middle School Gymnasium. Each school prepared a skit and designed t-shirts to be judged at the event.
