kids-crab-tournamentCrabbing: A Richmond Hill Tradition

Submitted by: Allison McCallum

“Crabbing and crab boils are as traditional in Richmond Hill as turkey is for Thanksgiving in the rest of the country,” Julie Seckinger mused when asked about why the Kid’s Crabbing Tourney was started five years ago in 2010. There are endless debates on when and how to catch and cook them, which is what spawned the idea to form a family friendly crabbing competition for kids. Over 70 children participated in the 5th Annual Kid’s Crabbing Tourney last Saturday, October 4th at Fort McAllister Marina, continuing the Richmond Hill crabbing tradition. Many of the kids have been competing since the beginning, and Julie says, “It’s wonderful to see the kids grow over the years.”
