Donna Reid, Athletic Director of the South Bryan County Recreation Department
This week Richmond Hill GA LIVE interviewed Donna Reid, the athletic director of the South Bryan County Recreation Department. Donna moved to Richmond Hill in 1991 and began volunteering at the Rec Department’s Concession stand in 1992. Shortly thereafter the athletic director left, so she decided to take that opportunity to apply for the job and has maintained the position ever since. However, doing this job by herself wasn’t easy, so she worked hard over the course of 16 years to expand the recreation department and build its programs into what they are today.
Now, with a staff of seven, Donna organizes over ten teams and ten weeks’ worth of summer camps, including basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling, and many others. She also handles most of the scheduling for games and special events, such as the little league baseball state-level tournament in the eleven-year-old age group, which the Recreation Department will be hosting on the 13th of July. “When everybody is at work, we’re at work. When everybody is off work we’re here, handling the crowd”, Reid says.
When asked how she got started with the Recreation Department she replied, “My initial communication with the Rec was a 4th of July barbeque picnic out at Fort McAllister, and from that summer until now I’ve been completely involved.” Donna told us that she enjoys being a part of the recreation department and that everyone should participate. “Recreational sports are great character builders; they build character in both kids and adults. It’s fun to participate! So come out here with your kids and have fun!”
